Hello!! I hope you had a fantastic weekend! Here in Ohio, we for sure had some Ohio-like weather. On Friday, Cleveland almost got more snow than we have had all winter. Jump ahead to yesterday, and it was back up in the 50’s and feeling rather spring-like! In this post, I’m going to take you from our exciting Saturday to the best recipe you’ve ever found for Mint M&M Sugar Cookies.
Mission Meet Great Great Aunt Dea:
On Saturday, Sean, Buckeye and I were able to get away for the day, and venture down to Columbus. Unless we are on scheduled vacation, a weekend off is a very rare occasion for Sean. Let’s call this particular weekend: Mission Meet Great Great Aunt Dea. Aunt Dea is my 94 year old Great Great Aunt from Oklahoma. She hasn’t been doing the greatest as of late, and my hubby hadn’t yet been able to meet her since she made the long journey to Ohio a few months ago. It really means so much to me that the two of them finally got to meet!
Since we are talking about cookies today, you have to know that our babydog, Buckeye, loves cookies. Here’s a pic of him eating his favorite, the Three Dog Bakery version of oreos!
Had to Stop for Cheryl’s Cookies:
On the way into Columbus, we stopped by Cheryl’s Cookies headquarters. If you haven’t had a Cheryl’s cookie before, more specifically, one of their buttercream frosted cutouts, you are missing out on life! Sean and I love them so much, that the Ohio State wrapped Cheryl’s cookies made it into our welcome bags for our semi-destination wedding weekend at the Lodge at Geneva on the Lake last September.
Do you know who else LOVES Cheryl’s? Great Great Aunt Dea. When I lived in Columbus, my sister and I had a tradition of going to the annual Cheryl’s cookie bake sale every year. Our first year there, we may or may not have bought an entire box of 100 cookies, plus a whole lot more. What are 2 girls to do with 100 frosted cutouts?! We knew we wouldn’t be able to get through them all, and ended up shipping a good amount to Aunt Dea. She absolutely loved her surprise and has since received them for every birthday and Christmas since then! Knowing Aunt Dea was out of cookies, Sean and I just had to stop in and pick some up on the way into town for her surprise visit from Sean.
Crazy Coupon Lady (As Sean Likes to Call Me) Stumbled Upon a Cookie Sale:
Guess what – Saturday was my lucky day! Cheryl’s had a sale going on, where you could mix and match 17 cookies for $17 dollars. As you may or may not know, St. Patrick’s Day is just around the corner, and yes, it falls on March 17th! Hence the 17 cookies for $17 dollars deal. I ended up going with a different special, and bought a few extra cookies, knowing 17 cookies wouldn’t last long with Aunt Dea.
Upon getting to Dea’s nursing home room, I woke her up from her nap. Don’t worry, she didn’t mind the slightest bit! Aunt Dea, Sean, and I talked and we talked. We also cut the ends of the stems off of her gorgeous flowers, so they would stay pretty for longer. We even filled up her lady bug Cheryl’s cookie jar with her newly acquired stash of Cheryl’s cookies.
Green Beer Bingo – In a Nursing Home
Later on, Aunt Dea suggested we go for a walk. She walked clear down to the other end of her Nursing Home – the furthest she has walked in weeks, since coming down with Pneumonia. While on our walk, we ran into the Activities Coordinator, and learned of all of the fun things to get involved with there in her building. It turns out that yesterday afternoon, they played Green Beer Bingo. Everyone is ready for St. Patrick’s Day, including Aunt Dea’s nursing home! If you know me, you know I wasn’t shy about asking what exactly Green Beer Bingo was. I even asked Sharlene, the coordinator if it was just green ginger ale!! Hehe. Nah, it turns out that instead of saying Bingo, you say Green Beer when you have a Bingo!
Let’s Talk Green Mint M&M Cookies
Now that you’ve heard a good amount about my weekend AND you know St. Patrick’s Day is near, let’s talk green cookies. I know, I know – We’ve already been talking about cookies. We really do have more cookie business to discuss though. If you’re a cookie monster like me, and truly enjoy indulging in cookies, you would know Girl Scout cookies are available everywhere right now. Tis’ the season! I don’t know about you, but those Thin Mints get me every time!!
Speaking of thin mints, I have a fun little story for you. A few weeks ago, I went to Lowes with my dad, in search of some hardware for his latest project. Upon making our way to the Lowe’s doors and seeing Girl Scouts standing there with their cookie display, I said, “Oh no, I don’t have any cash on me!” Dad replied, “I’ve got some on me if you need it.” He hadn’t even seen the Girl Scouts yet. Well you see, I didn’t NEED cash. I about died laughing when Dad offered to give me some though.
Do You Love Girl Scout Thin Mints Too?
If you too are a Girl Scout Thin Mint cookie lover, and you love easy cookie recipes, boy oh boy do I have the perfect cookie recipe for you. I adapted my recipe from this Six Sisters’ Andes Mint Grinch Cookie recipe. Basically, I replaced the mint extract with vanilla, for a delightful sugar cookie. Additionally, I used dark chocolate mint M&Ms instead of Andes Mints.
I actually discovered the Six Sisters’ recipe when planning a Grinch themed date night in just before Christmas. That night, the hubby and I had green colored white hot chocolate, spiked with peppermint Schnapps. We made his and hers Grinch ornaments. We snacked on some Grinch fruit kabobs while watching the movie next to our lit up tree. Finally, after eating some good ole’ Chicago-style pizza for dinner, we made my now famous Mint M&M Sugar Cookies!
Here’s the Recipe for Mint M&M Sugar Cookies
What in the world are Mint M&M Sugar Cookies? Think Girl Scout Thin Mints in the form of a perfectly textured, green sugar cookie with A TON of mint M&Ms. Are you ready for the recipe?
As mentioned earlier, I first made these just before this past Christmas. They were so good (and gone) that I ended up making a big batch to take to a Christmas get-together with a group of our resident friends that we get together with on a regular basis. Let’s just say several people came up to me as they were seeking for the baker of those green colored Mint M&M Sugar Cookies. They were that big of a hit! You might want to consider bringing them to a St. Patty’s Day party – after all, they are green!
If you end up caving and making these Mint M&M Sugar Cookies, I’d absolutely love to hear how you like them! Happy, Happy St. Patrick’s Day!!!
