Do you know how many times a day I ask the question “Why?!” It seems like such a simple, one word question. As an analytics consultant, I truly need to understand the thought and rationale behind current processes and decisions.
Even as children, we were taught that knowing why is a huge piece of the puzzle. In elementary school, I remember being told we must ask the five W’s in order to be able understand a problem. Who? What? Where? When? Why? Sound familiar?! These deceivingly simple, one word questions are five critical elements to gathering information in order to solve a problem. One word in particular stands out to me, above the other four. Why is always the most important, interesting piece of any story.
On an extremely broad level, your why is most important part of achieving success. Your why is what will keep the momentum going as you are working toward your goals. Without a strong, powerful, fight for your life kind of why, it is impossible to stay committed. Yep, you heard me right! When you are in a funk and don’t really want to do something, your why will keep you committed.
What is Your Why?
Your why is basically a strong reason(s) and rationale behind what you are trying to accomplish. For example, let’s say I want to lose 50 pounds. I guarantee you that unless I have an incredible reason for WHY I want to lose the weight, it’s just not going to happen girlfriend. Do you know how many calories 50 lbs is?! In case you are curious – that’s 175,000 calories! Such a huge number is not doable unless you have a moving reason for why you want to lose the weight.
Let’s face it – am I really going to work out 5 times a week and eat healthy 80% of the time just to see the scale weight me in at 50 lbs lighter than I am now? Probably not! However, let’s say I getting married on the beach in Maui one year from now. I want to live past 100 with the love of my life, which is going to require a lifestyle change, not just temporarily shedding some pounds. My why behind losing the 50 pounds is to get in the habit of a healthier lifestyle, while becoming the healthiest, fittest version of myself that I can be. Now that my friends is what I call a why!!
What is it that will drive you forward and really get the momentum going?! If you’re an entrepreneur – maybe it’s time and financial freedom you’re seeking, that you’ve so badly wanted ever since you can remember. You don’t want to have to show up and work a typical 9 to 5 for someone else, on their terms. Being your own boss and leaving your mark on the world is an absolute must!! You see, your why must be ginormous and bigger than life itself. It must be so powerful that when you really don’t want to do something, all you have to remind yourself is why!
End of January = Many Goals out the Window
Girly, we are now in the last full week of January! How many of this year’s goals and New Years resolutions are you still hustling toward? I ask because what I typically see and what I myself have sometimes done goes something like this:
C) Stop using the planner at the beginning of February.
Have you been there, done that?! Can I get an AMEN?! If you’ve been in the same boat, what this tells me is that your why simply was not strong enough. Your why was not compelling enough for you to do those tasks that you did not want to do. Your lack of why ruined your perfectly planned out goals.
Coming up with Your Why – Easier Said than Done
If what I just said rang in, I challenge you to figure out your why. Your why must be something you absolutely, truly want – not just something you think you want. If you already know exactly what you want, why do you want that over something else? Your why must be strong enough that you are certain it is worth your time and energy.
Girlfriend, this is something that I can’t do for you. What makes this so difficult is that you are the only person who can answer these questions for yourself!
