Happy, Happy Mother’s Day to all of the hardworking mommas out there. In the spirit of Mother’s Day, there is one thing I absolutely have to write about today. Until meeting my hubby, I had no clue how often I say one particular idiom. Any time I say it now, Sean laughs a little and says, “There you go again with your phrases.” Whenever someone is feeling stuck and like they aren’t making forward progress, there I am with this phrase. Whenever someone needs encouragement to keep achieving, once again, this idiom comes flying out of my mouth. I dare you to take one guess as to where on Earth I got this phrase from. You guessed it, Mom!
The World is your Oyster
According to Google, this idiom means “you are in a position to take the opportunities that life has to offer.” Simply take consistent, purposeful action. You aren’t happy in your current career? You have the power to change that. Want to join a non-profit board? Guess what, you have the ability to find one you are passionate about and go all in to help make a difference in the world.
Growing up, Mom always instilled in me that I have the strength, the beauty and the brains to achieve anything that I put my mind and effort into. For this, I will forever be grateful. Her saying this idiom to me time and time again truly did make me believe I can be anything. Having this confidence is worth so much in life.
Just Do It
There have been times where I have applied for jobs and opportunities that I knew people with more experience were going for. So what. As Anthony Robbins once said, “If you always do what you’ve always done, you will always get what you’ve always got.” Getting to where you want to be might mean you have to take chances and leaps of faith. It might also entail someone taking a chance on you and having faith in your abilities. Life isn’t always some hunky dory picture perfect yellow brick road. Sometimes life consists of unpaved, completely broken roads that we have to travel down to get to where we want to go.
Thinking about our upcoming vacation today, I suddenly remembered a picture from a past vacation. At that moment, I knew I had to write a quick post about my Mom’s encouragement. A couple of years ago, upon returning back to the States, Sean and I had a decent layover in Charlotte. We decided to post up at the Oyster Bar for an adult refreshment. Sitting in front of me was a sign that read, “The world is your oyster.” I absolutely had to take the following pic.
With that, I’ll leave you with one thought. Get it girl. The world is your oyster! You have the power to accomplish anything you decide you want to do.
Thank you so much Mom, for you and dad being my biggest cheerleaders growing up. Love you lots!
